my review of the Sentry Stop That correction Spray

The effectiveness and appropriateness of this behavior correction spray is a topic of concern for many. I’ve read up and thought about this issue for a long time and I’m very grateful for this tool.

I have a lovely 10 YO Russian Blue mix rescue cat who exhibits OCD tail chasing to a point where she came to us as a kitten with a bloody and scabbed over tail. I’m talking loud growls and anger and pulling out tufts of fur. When she’s isn’t doing this she’s sweet and cuddly and loves to play and be doted on. Our veterinarian gave her a clean bill of health and she is otherwise a happy cat. Combined with multiple feline enrichment techniques, this spray is just one of the tools I use to help her stop her unwanted behavior. I did not want to use it at first because I thought there was a level of cruelty to it. It actually improved our relationship where I decreased the need to have to yell at my cat to stop her behavior, and we’ve come to a point where I just have to show her the bright orange canister to make her stop. There are less stressful situations now as she’s decreased this behavior and we can focus on playtime and other activities. This is not a sponsored post but based on my experiences I strongly recommend this product (combined with feline enrichment strategies) for people who are having problems with cats and significant unwanted aggression/ behavior. Best used in conjunction with positive reinforcment - exercising/ playing with your cat for optimum results. This spray helps to stop the unwanted behavior temporarily, but you also have to work to provide your cat with a proper outlet and path for the redirected energy, or your cat could get desensitized to the spray.

Uses: If your cat acts overly aggressive towards you, biting, scratching, or exhibits unwanted behavior. also good for distracting two cats that are fighting. Works to stop the behavior immediately and sends a clear signal that this behavior is not acceptable.

Methodology: This works on three separate and levels. It releases a pheromone spray into the air to help calm your cat down, but also combines a loud hissing noise and a lavender scent to draw your cats attention in an immediate way.

Pros: Sends the right message ‘NO’ immediately and quickly. Just as we learn not to bite and kick as young children, clear boundaries must be set for our cats. The difficulty lies in getting this message across to them. You may have tried to yell no or push them away, or perhaps sprayed water on them to deter this behavior. Sometimes they don’t understand that this means ‘no’ and this will lead them to continue the behavior. Unclear signals just leads to more confusion as cats are not sure what is right and what is wrong. We want to send the right message in the shortest possible time to avoid miscommunication. We don’t want to spend any time yelling at our cats but it’s unpleasant to continue the aggressive/unacceptable behavior, as well as weakening our bond with them.

Cons: Some people are concerned that scaring the cat will further traumatize it and lead to confusion and more bad behavior. It can be more confusing and traumatizing for all involved if the cat continues the aggressive behavior, and for the cat to not learn that this is not acceptable. You don’t want to send a mixed message to your cat. Nip the problem in the bud right away so you can focus on fun and positive enrichment activities (playtime, treats, puzzle feeders) to strengthen the bond between you and your cat. The canister is also quite small and pricey foe something that you can only use so many times. However, it is so effective that I only had to use it 4 or 5 times, and now I only have to show the bright orange canister to my cat for her to know that this means ‘no’. I use it sparingly and only as a last resort also to avoid desensitization. When used properly and combined with play techniques, this spray has helped my cat decrease her negative behavior, decreasing her level of stress, and has improved the relationship between me and my cat.
